Soalverse
Privacy Policy
The short version
- No accounts. We don’t ask for your real name, email, phone number or payment details to play.
- What you type in a game (display name, answers, chat) is shared with that game’s host, players and spectators, and is deleted when the host closes the game.
- No advertising, no analytics trackers, and we never sell or rent your information.
- Questions or requests? Email info@soalverse.com.
1. Who we are
Trivia Night (the “Service”, including trivia.soalverse.ca, the live game and the demo) is operated by Soalverse, a registered business in Ontario, Canada (“we”, “us”). We are responsible for the personal information described in this policy. The person accountable for our privacy practices can be reached at info@soalverse.com.
This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. It is written to meet Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, where they apply, Quebec’s privacy law and the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). If an organization hosts an event under a separate agreement with us, that agreement may include additional privacy terms.
2. Information we collect
Information you enter in a game
- Display name, emoji and team name you choose when you join. You don’t have to use your real name.
- Answers, scores and game activity, such as which answer you picked and when.
- Chat messages you send in a game.
- Game setup if you host: game settings and any question sets you upload or send.
Information collected automatically
- An anonymous sign-in ID. When you open the game, our database provider (Google Firebase) gives your browser a random anonymous identifier so the game can protect its data. It isn’t linked to your name, email or any account.
- Technical information such as your IP address, browser type and device information. This is processed by our hosting and infrastructure providers when your browser loads the Service, for example in server logs used to deliver pages and protect against abuse. We don’t use it to build profiles of you.
What we don’t collect
We don’t collect email addresses, phone numbers, payment information, precise location, contacts or photos through the game. If you email us, we’ll receive your email address and whatever you choose to include in your message.
The demo
The demo runs entirely in your browser with simulated players. What you type into the demo is not sent to us or saved in our database.
3. Information stored on your device
We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies. The Service stores a small amount of information in your browser’s local storage so it works properly:
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Current game session (game code, display name, role) | Rejoin your game if you refresh or your phone locks | Until you leave the game; ignored after 4 hours |
| Anonymous sign-in token (Firebase) | Keep your anonymous sign-in active so you can read and write game data | Until you clear your browser data |
| Preferences (visual theme, “don’t show rules again”, demo settings) | Remember your choices | Until you clear your browser data (demo settings: until you close the tab) |
| Diagnostics log (recent app events such as screen changes and connection status) | Help troubleshoot problems | Stays on your device. It is never sent to us automatically; you would have to copy and share it yourself |
You can remove all of this at any time by clearing your browser’s site data for trivia.soalverse.ca.
4. How we use information
- To run live games: showing names, answers, scores, chat and results to the people in the game.
- To keep games fair and secure, for example checking answers, preventing tampering and letting hosts remove disruptive players.
- To keep the Service working, fix problems and improve it.
- To respond to you when you contact us.
- To comply with the law and protect our rights and the safety of others.
By using the Service, you consent to these uses, which are necessary to provide the game. Where the GDPR applies, we rely on providing the Service you requested and on our legitimate interest in running a safe, working game. We don’t use your information for advertising or for automated decisions that significantly affect you.
5. Who we share it with
- People in your game. Your display name, emoji, answers, scores and chat messages are visible to the host, other players and spectators in the same game, and may be shown on a big screen at the event.
- Service providers who process information on our behalf to run the Service:
- Google Firebase (Google LLC) for the real-time game database and anonymous sign-in;
- Netlify for website hosting;
- Google Fonts (Google LLC) and jsDelivr for fonts, code libraries and, on older devices, emoji images. Your browser contacts these services directly, which shares your IP address with them.
- When required by law, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Soalverse, our users or others.
- In a business transfer, such as a merger or sale, subject to this policy.
We never sell or rent personal information.
6. Where it is stored
Our providers store and process information on servers in the United States and possibly other countries. Information held outside Canada is subject to the laws of those countries and may be accessible to their courts, law enforcement and national security authorities. We choose providers that protect information with safeguards comparable to those required in Canada.
7. How long we keep it
- Game data (names, answers, scores, chat and uploaded questions for a game) is deleted from our database about one minute after the host closes the game. In the app, chat messages disappear from view after five minutes.
- If a game isn’t closed normally, its data may remain until we remove it. You can ask us to delete it at any time (see section 10).
- Information on your device stays there as described in section 3 until you clear it.
- Provider logs are kept by our hosting and infrastructure providers according to their own retention policies.
- Emails you send us are kept as long as needed to respond and for our records.
8. Children
The Service is intended for people aged 13 and older and is not directed to children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it. Events for schools or youth groups are only offered under a separate agreement, with content made for ages 13 and up.
9. Security
We use safeguards appropriate to the information involved, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), anonymous sign-in, database rules that restrict who can read and change game data, and host-only controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so please don’t share sensitive personal information in display names or chat. If a breach of security safeguards creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify affected individuals and regulators as required by law.
10. Your choices and rights
Subject to legal exceptions, you can ask to access the personal information we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted, and you can withdraw your consent (for example by leaving a game and clearing your browser data), understanding that we can’t run a game for you without some of this information. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to data portability, to object to or restrict certain processing, or to have your information de-indexed.
To make a request, email info@soalverse.com. Because we don’t collect contact details or accounts, it helps to include the game code, the display name you used and roughly when you played, so we can find the right information. We will respond within 30 days.
If you’re not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec if you live in Quebec, or your local data protection authority if you live in the EU or UK.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the Service changes. We’ll update the “Last updated” date above, and if the changes are significant we’ll make reasonable efforts to point them out on the Service.
